Colgate Palmolive’s Stock Surge Signals Renewed Optimism in the FMCG Sector
The recent GST relief measures have sparked a notable rally in Colgate Palmolive’s shares, reflecting broader optimism in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector.
Market Reaction to GST Changes
Colgate Palmolive’s share price opened at ₹1,736.20 and climbed to an intraday high of ₹1,868.90 on the National Stock Exchange (NSE), reflecting a strong investor response to the GST Council’s recent decisions. By 2:50 PM, the stock was trading at ₹1,845.90, up approximately 6.35%, while the benchmark Nifty 50 index fell by 1.48%. This divergence highlights the market’s positive sentiment towards Colgate in light of favorable regulatory changes.
Implications of the New ITC Rules
The GST Council’s approval to expand the range of expenses eligible for input tax credit is a significant development for FMCG companies. Notably, businesses can now claim ITC on health and life insurance for employees, as well as on telecommunication towers and pipelines outside factories. These changes are expected to enhance the financial flexibility of companies like Colgate Palmolive, which rely heavily on capital expenditures and employee welfare.
Furthermore, allowing ITC on free samples and on stock written off after expiry aligns with industry practices and could lead to improved profitability for FMCG firms. Sunny Agrawal, head of fundamental research at SBI Securities, emphasized that these changes could bode well for Colgate and similar companies, especially with the festive season approaching, which typically sees a surge in consumer spending.
Colgate Palmolive’s Strong Quarterly Performance
In its latest quarterly results, Colgate Palmolive reported a 7% increase in net profit, reaching ₹343.08 crore for the June quarter of FY27, up from ₹320.62 crore in the same period last year. This growth was driven by strong volume growth in its toothpaste segment and improved margins. Sales also rose by 12% to ₹1,590.56 crore, indicating robust demand for its products.
Despite total expenses increasing by 13.8% to ₹1,160.57 crore, the overall income, including other income, grew by 12% year-on-year to ₹1,626.10 crore. This performance underscores the company’s resilience in a challenging economic environment and positions it favorably for future growth.
