Sun TV Stock Soars 40% in Three Weeks as Analysts Set Bullish Targets

The recent surge in Sun TV’s stock highlights investor confidence in the media giant’s growth potential, driven by its lucrative sports franchises and strong cash flow.

Sun TV Network’s stock has experienced a remarkable rally, rising 40% in just three weeks, prompting analysts to reassess their valuations. Elara Capital has raised its target price for the stock to ₹925, reflecting optimism about the company’s robust cash-generating capabilities and strategic positioning in the sports media sector.

Stock Performance Overview

Sun TV’s stock has surged from ₹451.70 on September 18 to a high of ₹663.90 on September 30, before consolidating around these elevated levels. Despite this impressive rally, the stock remains approximately 25% below its all-time high of ₹842 achieved in August 2024. As of Thursday, the stock traded at ₹629, reflecting a slight loss of 1.2% amid broader market declines, with the NSE Nifty down 1.1%.

Analyst Insights from Elara Capital

Elara Capital has maintained a ‘Buy’ rating on Sun TV, citing its strong cash-generating television business and a robust sports portfolio as key drivers of growth. The brokerage highlights that sports franchises, including SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) and others, contribute significantly to the company’s equity value, accounting for approximately 45% of its sum-of-the-parts (SOTP) valuation. This valuation is bolstered by recent high-value private deals in the Indian Premier League (IPL), which have set new benchmarks for franchise valuations.

Elara’s report emphasizes that SRH’s consistent performance in the IPL, having reached the playoffs in eight out of fourteen seasons, enhances its market value. The recent sales of other IPL teams, such as Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, further indicate a potential valuation range of ₹15,000-16,700 crore for established franchises. With cricket revenue more than doubling to ₹6,600 crore in FY24, Sun TV’s financial outlook appears promising.
