Chennai Petroleum and MRPL Shares Defy Market Trends with Notable Gains
Despite a generally weak market, shares of Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited (CPCL) and Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) have surged, reflecting strong investor sentiment amid rising oil prices and favorable market conditions.
Oil Prices and Market Dynamics
The rise in shares of CPCL and MRPL can be attributed to a notable increase in global oil prices. Brent crude futures rose by 93 cents, or 0.92%, reaching $101.51 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude increased by 82 cents, also up 0.92%, to $90.25. This upward trend in oil prices is driven by supply constraints due to a storm approaching US oil-producing regions and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, particularly attacks by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis on Saudi Arabia.
Refining Margins and Market Expectations
Analysts are optimistic about the performance of upstream players and standalone refiners in the upcoming quarter, citing firm crude realizations and strong transport fuel cracks. YES Securities noted that the ongoing geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East are likely to support realized Gross Refining Margins (GRMs). The average price of Brent crude for the September quarter was recorded at $90.9 per barrel, marking a year-on-year increase of $22.8, although it decreased by $5.7 quarter-on-quarter.
Opportunities for Indian Refiners
The current market dynamics present a favorable outlook for Indian refiners like CPCL and MRPL. With China suspending fuel exports, Indian refiners may have the opportunity to fill the supply gap. Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, emphasized that the key factor will be whether petrol and diesel prices increase at a rate that outpaces crude costs, which could enhance profits from both domestic and export sales. However, the benefits from exports will depend on various factors, including volumes, freight, and applicable duties.
Market Sentiment and Future Prospects
The recent performance of CPCL and MRPL shares reflects broader market sentiments regarding global diesel supply concerns, particularly potential disruptions in US Gulf Coast refineries. Dhaval Popat, an analyst at Choice Institutional Equities, noted that higher global product prices and stronger cracks are translating into improved realizations and refining margins for both companies. Historically, periods of sharp increases in gasoil cracks have coincided with strong share price performance for these refiners, suggesting a positive outlook as the market adjusts to current conditions.
