Sugar Stocks Rally as Global Prices Surge and Demand Grows
The recent surge in sugar stocks highlights a complex interplay of global market dynamics and domestic supply challenges.
Drivers of the Sugar Stock Surge
The recent uptick in sugar stocks can be largely attributed to a significant rise in global sugar prices. In the latest trading session, US sugar futures surged by 4%, marking a 14% increase over the past month and a staggering 23% year-on-year rise. This bullish trend in global prices has sparked renewed interest in domestic sugar stocks, with Dhampur Sugar Mills climbing 8.56% to ₹192 and Sakthi Sugars gaining 8.7% to ₹19.35 on the National Stock Exchange (NSE).
Analysts like G Chokkalingam from Equinomics Research have noted that the firmness in sugar prices, coupled with strong demand, is driving investor interest. However, he cautioned that government measures to control domestic sugar prices could limit further price increases, suggesting that current prices may be nearing their peak.
Global Factors Impacting Sugar Prices
The global sugar market is facing challenges, particularly due to adverse weather conditions affecting major producers. Brazil, one of the largest sugar producers, is experiencing a slowdown in cane harvesting due to excessive rainfall, which could further strain supplies. This situation is compounded by rising crude oil prices, which have remained around $100 per gallon, benefiting sugar companies with distilleries as they can produce ethanol from sugarcane.
India’s sugar market is also navigating complexities, with production estimates for the 2025/26 season being revised downwards from 34.3 million tonnes to 30.6 million tonnes due to pest diseases and waterlogging. This has resulted in tighter near-term supplies, although current inventory levels are manageable with 3 to 3.5 million tonnes against a monthly consumption of approximately 2.2 million tonnes.
Government Measures and Market Outlook
As the festive season approaches, demand for sugar is expected to rise. In response, the Indian government has implemented several measures to support the market, including duty-free imports of 1 million tonnes by October 31, stock limits for dealers and bulk consumers, and an earlier start to the crushing season around October 15. These steps aim to stabilize prices and ensure adequate supply during peak demand periods.
Investment strategies are evolving in this environment. Dhruv Joglekar, an assistant fund manager at Monarch PMS, advises investors to focus on companies with low leverage and a solid distillery mix that generate cash flow rather than just headlines. He also highlights the importance of monitoring potential policy reversals, import arrivals, and ongoing monsoon conditions, which could significantly impact the sector.
