SEBI Launches Nationwide Investor Awareness Campaign, Warns Against Finfluencers

SEBI’s New Initiative Aims to Enhance Investor Literacy and Curb Finfluencer Influence

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) is stepping up its efforts to educate investors and combat misinformation in the financial markets through a comprehensive nationwide campaign.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has launched a nationwide investor-awareness campaign called Project Jagrook, which aims to enhance financial literacy across India until March 2027. The initiative seeks to educate investors in rural areas and educational institutions while warning them against the risks associated with anonymous tips and finfluencers.

Understanding Project Jagrook

Launched by SEBI Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey in Chandigarh, Project Jagrook is a collaborative effort involving stock exchanges, depositories, the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI), and the National Institute of Securities Markets (NISM). The campaign will deliver investor-awareness messages in multiple languages, ensuring accessibility for diverse audiences.

The initiative is particularly focused on educating young investors through its MUST (Mentoring of University and College Students through Trainers) program. This program will train teachers and senior students as “Partner Trainers” to disseminate financial literacy among their peers.

Addressing the Finfluencer Phenomenon

One of the key messages of the campaign is a strong caution against the influence of finfluencers—individuals who provide financial advice on social media without proper credentials. Pandey emphasized the need for investors to rely on regulated products and to avoid making investment decisions based solely on trends or peer pressure. “Invest because you understand,” he advised, highlighting the importance of informed decision-making.

SEBI’s initiative comes at a time when participation in the securities market has increased, yet a recent survey revealed that only 36% of investors possess high or moderate knowledge of the market. This gap underscores the necessity for enhanced education and awareness.

Grassroots Engagement and Future Plans

To further its outreach, SEBI plans to collaborate with the Ministry of Panchayati Raj to promote financial literacy in rural areas. This partnership aims to educate citizens about regulated products and fraud prevention, ensuring that even the most remote communities have access to crucial financial information.

Additionally, SEBI will introduce a National Securities Market Awareness Curriculum, complemented by a free Sebi Investor Awareness Test. This curriculum will provide a structured approach to investor education, adaptable to various audiences.
