Sensex Plunges 1,280 Points Intraday to 2,026 Low; Nifty at 22,200

Indian Markets Face Turbulence as Sensex Hits New Low Amid Rate Hike Fears

The Indian equity markets experienced a significant downturn, with the Sensex plunging to a new calendar year low, raising concerns among investors about the future trajectory of the economy.

The BSE Sensex dropped 1,280 points intraday, marking a significant decline as it fell below its previous low of 71,545. The Nifty 50 index also faced a steep drop, closing at 22,296, reflecting broader market apprehensions.

Market Overview: A Sharp Decline

The BSE benchmark Sensex fell to a low of 71,293, a stark contrast from its earlier high of 72,573. This decline represents a loss of 1.3% or 900 points by 2:15 PM on Thursday. The Nifty 50 index mirrored this trend, plunging to an intraday low of 22,217, down 1.7% from its high of 22,611. This downturn has raised alarms, especially as it comes just before a long weekend, with markets set to close for Gandhi Jayanti.

Sector Performance: Broad-Based Losses

The market’s decline was broad-based, with the Nifty Midcap and Smallcap indices each down approximately 1.5%. The Nifty Auto index was particularly hard-hit, dropping 4%, with major players like Mahindra & Mahindra and Maruti Suzuki leading the losses. Other sectors, including Metals, Defence, and Consumer Durables, also saw declines of over 2%. The overall market breadth was negative, with 3,250 stocks declining against just 990 advancing.

Drivers of the Market Downturn

Analysts have pointed to several key factors contributing to this market downturn. Chokkalingam, the Founder and Chief Investment Officer at Equinomics Research, highlighted the lack of liquidity and high crude oil prices as significant concerns. The recent surge in IPOs has drained liquidity from the market, making it challenging for stock prices to find buyers. Furthermore, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) have been net sellers, offloading stocks worth ₹44,000 crore in September alone, which has compounded the downward pressure on the market.

Adding to the market’s woes, Brent crude prices remain elevated at around $99 per barrel, influenced by geopolitical uncertainties surrounding US-Iran relations. Analysts also expressed concerns regarding the upcoming RBI policy meeting, with expectations of a potential rate hike due to rising bond yields and inflation fears. Kranthi Bathini, an Equity Strategist at WealthMills Securities, noted that traders are hesitant to take new positions ahead of the long weekend, further exacerbating market volatility.
