Oil Prices Hold Steady Amid US-Iran Peace Talks, Supply Outlook

Oil Prices Stabilize as Investors Monitor US-Iran Diplomatic Efforts and Supply Dynamics

Oil prices remain steady as market participants weigh the implications of ongoing US-Iran peace talks alongside the evolving supply landscape in West Asia.

Oil prices held nearly flat in early Asian trading on Thursday, following a day of gains and significant monthly increases, as investors assessed the outcome of US-Iran peace negotiations and the outlook for crude exports from West Asia.

Current Market Performance

Brent crude futures saw a slight uptick of 12 cents, or 0.1%, reaching $98.15 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude dipped by 7 cents to $90.35 per barrel. Both benchmarks experienced a notable rise of about $1 per barrel on Wednesday, contributing to Brent’s impressive 14% monthly gain in September—the largest since July. WTI, on the other hand, recorded a 5% increase over the same period.

Supply Dynamics and Geopolitical Factors

Market analysts are closely monitoring supply dynamics, particularly in light of Saudi Arabia’s recent resumption of oil exports from its Red Sea port of Yanbu. This development comes as peace talks between the US and Iran appear to be stalling, leading to a mixed sentiment in the market. According to Toshitaka Tazawa, an analyst at Fujitomi Securities, while buying pressure persists due to supply concerns, there is also selling pressure as West Asian oil exports show signs of recovery.

Goldman Sachs has reported that Gulf oil exports, including those classified as “dark exports” (where ships operate with their location transponders turned off), have rebounded to 23.3 million barrels per day over the past week, aligning with their 2025 average. This recovery is significant, especially as exports doubled in September, indicating a robust supply response.

US Crude Inventory Trends

Recent data from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) revealed an increase in US crude inventories by 922,000 barrels, bringing the total to 427.3 million barrels for the week ending September 25. This rise is contrary to analysts’ expectations of a 264,000-barrel draw, highlighting the complexities of the current supply-demand balance. However, fuel inventories fell sharply, driven by strong seasonal and global demand, which could support prices in the near term.

Looking Ahead: Peace Talks and Production Decisions

As the market looks ahead, the outcome of US-Iran diplomatic efforts remains a critical factor. Qatar has expressed hope that shuttle diplomacy between Tehran and Washington could yield positive results. However, US President Donald Trump has denied reports suggesting a willingness to ease sanctions on Iran in exchange for concessions regarding its nuclear program. This uncertainty adds another layer of complexity to the oil market.

Additionally, OPEC+ is expected to maintain its oil production targets during their upcoming meeting, which could further influence market dynamics. Analysts suggest that a new catalyst, such as progress in peace negotiations, will be necessary for WTI to break below the immediate support level of $88 per barrel.

Key Highlights

  • Brent crude futures rose to $98.15, while WTI fell to $90.35.
  • Brent recorded a 14% monthly gain, the largest since July.
  • Saudi Arabia resumed oil exports from Yanbu, signaling supply recovery.
  • US crude inventories increased by 922,000 barrels, contrary to expectations.
  • OPEC+ likely to keep production targets steady in upcoming meeting.

Investor Note: The stability in oil prices amidst geopolitical tensions and supply dynamics presents both opportunities and risks for investors. Monitoring developments in US-Iran relations and OPEC+ production decisions will be essential for making informed investment choices in the energy sector.
