India’s IPO Pipeline Reaches New Heights, Signaling Robust Market Activity

The Indian primary market is experiencing a remarkable surge, with the IPO pipeline reaching ₹3.86 trillion, a significant increase compared to previous years.

India’s primary market is witnessing an unprecedented boom, with the mainboard IPO pipeline hitting a staggering ₹3.86 trillion—nearly 3.5 times the ₹1.10 trillion raised through 84 issues in 2026 so far—indicating companies’ growing appetite to tap public markets, according to the industry body Association of Investment Bankers of India (AIBI).

Significant Growth in IPO Activity

The current IPO pipeline reflects a robust interest from companies looking to access public markets, with around 130 firms having received approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). Additionally, 75 companies are in the process of awaiting regulatory approval after filing their Draft Red Herring Prospectuses (DRHPs). This surge in activity is a clear indication of the evolving landscape of capital formation in India.

As per AIBI Chairman Mahavir Lunawat, of the total pipeline, approximately ₹2.43 trillion is attributed to companies that have already received SEBI approval, while another ₹1.44 trillion is pending approval. This significant increase in the pipeline is a testament to the growing confidence of companies in the Indian capital markets.

A Shift Towards Sustainable Capital Formation

The report titled “India Capital Markets: Navigating Geopolitics, Capital & Growth” highlights a transition in the primary market from episodic fundraising to a more sustained capital formation ecosystem. Between 2016 and 2026, mainboard IPOs have cumulatively raised ₹8.36 trillion, with annual fundraising increasing from ₹26,494 crore in 2016 to ₹1.76 trillion in 2025. This upward trajectory is indicative of a maturing market that is becoming a structural pillar of India’s economy.

In 2026 alone, 84 mainboard IPOs have raised ₹1.10 trillion, showcasing a remarkable increase in the number of issues from 26 in 2016 to 103 in 2025. This growth not only reflects the increasing number of companies looking to go public but also the expanding investor base that is actively participating in these offerings.

Diverse Investor Participation

Investor participation in the IPO market has also broadened significantly. The average subscription levels in 2026 year-to-date (YTD) stand at approximately 49 times for Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIBs), 86 times for High Net Worth Individuals (HNIs), and 26 times for retail investors. This diverse participation underscores the growing interest and confidence among various investor segments in India’s capital markets.

The SME IPO segment has also seen substantial growth, with 267 issues in 2025 and 156 issues in 2026 YTD. Cumulative SME fundraising during the 2016-2026 period reached ₹39,849 crore, with the average issue size increasing from ₹8 crore in 2016 to ₹45 crore in 2026 YTD. This expansion highlights the increasing accessibility of the capital markets for smaller enterprises.

Future Outlook for India’s Capital Markets

Looking ahead, Lunawat emphasizes that the next phase of India’s capital markets will depend on the quality of issuers, institutional participation, and adherence to disclosure standards. The current expansion of the IPO pipeline and the strengthening of the intermediary ecosystem suggest that the primary market is poised for sustained growth.

As the market matures, it is essential for stakeholders to focus on efficient capital allocation and maintaining high standards of transparency to foster investor confidence and ensure long-term sustainability.
