Nifty’s Key Resistance Levels Signal Market Direction Ahead
As the Nifty index stabilizes after a prolonged decline, key resistance levels will dictate its future trajectory.
Nifty’s Recovery: A Critical Juncture
After a challenging six-week period marked by declines, the Nifty index is beginning to show signs of stability. According to Sachin Gupta, VP-Research at Choice Broking, the index is currently at a pivotal point, with the potential for a recovery contingent on its performance around key technical levels. The immediate resistance lies within the 23,500 to 23,600 range, while support is identified at 23,200 to 23,000. A decisive breakout above 23,600 could signal a shift in market sentiment, potentially leading to targets of 24,000 to 24,500. Conversely, a drop below 23,000 could reignite selling pressure.
Broader Indices: Smallcap Outperformance Expected
In the context of broader market indices, Gupta notes that the Nifty Smallcap 250 appears to be in a stronger position compared to its Midcap counterpart. The Smallcap index has recently surpassed its long-term falling trendline, indicating a positive shift in momentum. Holding above the 50-week exponential moving average (EMA) at approximately 17,180 reinforces this bullish outlook. If the index can clear the immediate resistance around 18,450 to 18,500, it could target levels between 18,800 and 19,000. On the downside, the first key support is at 18,000, followed by 17,500.
Sectoral Insights: Pharma and Healthcare in Focus
Gupta highlights that the recent market correction has led to a shift towards defensive sectors, particularly pharma and healthcare, which are exhibiting relative strength. This trend is supported by increased buying interest and improving momentum, making them attractive for investors seeking stability amid broader market volatility. In contrast, the Nifty IT index remains a laggard, facing significant challenges such as reduced global IT spending and rising operational costs. A sustained move below the 25,700 to 25,800 support zone could further exacerbate the sector’s weakness.
Technical Risks: Monitoring Weakness in IT and Metals
From a technical perspective, Gupta warns of potential red flags in the IT and metals sectors. The IT index is currently trading below critical moving averages, indicating persistent selling pressure. Meanwhile, the metals sector is attempting a recovery but faces strong resistance around the 13,300 to 13,500 levels. A breakdown below the key support of 12,900 could trigger further declines, with targets potentially reaching 12,750 and 12,500. Additionally, any deterioration in banking, auto, or rate-sensitive sectors could pose risks to the broader market.
Key Highlights
- Nifty index showing signs of stability after six weeks of decline.
- Key resistance at 23,500–23,600; support at 23,200–23,000.
- Nifty Smallcap 250 poised for outperformance over Midcap.

- IT and Metals sectors facing significant technical challenges.
Investor Note: As the Nifty navigates critical resistance and support levels, investors should closely monitor sectoral performances, particularly in pharma and healthcare, while remaining cautious of the IT and metals sectors that exhibit signs of weakness.
