Purple Style Shares Debut 7% Below IPO Price

Purple Style Labs Faces Challenging Market Debut with 7% Discount

Investors express caution as Purple Style shares open below IPO expectations, raising concerns about future growth.

Purple Style Labs made a disappointing market debut, listing at a discount of 7% to its IPO price, which raises questions about its valuation and growth prospects.

Weak Listing Performance

Purple Style Labs shares opened at ₹539 on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and ₹535 on the National Stock Exchange (NSE), reflecting a decline of 6.26% and 6.96% respectively from the IPO price of ₹575. This underwhelming debut comes as a surprise, particularly as the grey market premium (GMP) had indicated a more favorable listing price of around ₹565. The weak market reception suggests that investor sentiment may be cautious, influenced by the company’s financial performance and future outlook.

Financial Concerns and Valuation Issues

Analysts have raised red flags regarding Purple Style’s financial trajectory. Shivani Nyati, head of wealth at Swastika Investmart, pointed out that the company’s profit after tax (PAT) loss has significantly widened, projecting losses of ₹188.4 crore for FY25 and ₹285.4 crore for FY26. With no clear path to profitability, the valuation appears steep at approximately 9.3 to 9.6 times FY26 revenue. Furthermore, the company’s price-to-earnings (P/E) and price-to-book (P/B) ratios are not meaningful due to ongoing losses and a negative net worth.

IPO Subscription and Investor Sentiment

The Purple Style IPO was subscribed 1.29 times, with qualified institutional buyers (QIBs) showing stronger interest, subscribing 1.43 times, while non-institutional investors (NIIs) only subscribed 0.84 times. Retail individual investors (RIIs) demonstrated notable interest, subscribing 1.58 times. This mixed subscription rate reflects a divergence in confidence among different investor categories, with retail investors appearing more optimistic despite the broader concerns.

Utilization of IPO Proceeds

Purple Style Labs plans to allocate ₹371.13 crore of the IPO proceeds towards lease liabilities for its experience centers and back-end offices in India. Additionally, ₹138.90 crore is earmarked for sales and marketing expenses. This allocation raises concerns about the limited funds available for growth initiatives, which could hinder the company’s ability to expand and innovate in a competitive market.

Key Highlights

  • Purple Style shares debuted at ₹539 on BSE and ₹535 on NSE, down 7% from IPO price.
  • Company’s PAT loss projected to widen significantly over the next two fiscal years.
  • IPO was subscribed 1.29 times, with retail investors showing notable interest.
  • Majority of IPO proceeds allocated for lease liabilities and marketing expenses.
  • Analysts recommend ‘Avoid’ due to high valuation and unclear path to profitability.

Investor Note: Investors should approach Purple Style Labs with caution, considering the company’s widening losses and high valuation. The limited growth prospects and significant allocation of IPO proceeds towards liabilities rather than expansion could pose risks for potential investors.
