Can Nifty and Bank Nifty Reverse Their Downtrend? Analysts Weigh In

As global markets show signs of recovery, Indian investors are keenly watching Nifty and Bank Nifty for potential reversals in their recent downtrends.

Equity markets are poised for a positive start, buoyed by supportive global cues and easing crude oil prices. Analysts suggest that while there is potential for a rebound, caution remains paramount amid high energy costs.

Global Market Influence

The Indian equity markets are likely to open on a positive note, reflecting gains in global indices. The S&P 500 and NASDAQ saw increases of up to 1.7% in the previous session, while Asian markets such as Nikkei and Hang Seng also advanced. This global momentum is crucial as it sets the tone for domestic trading, especially for indices like Nifty and Bank Nifty that have been under pressure recently.

Technical Analysis of Nifty

Technical analysts are cautiously optimistic about Nifty’s potential to reverse its downtrend. Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, notes that a sustained move above the 23,400 mark could signal a rebound, potentially pushing the index toward the 23,500-23,600 range. However, the failure to reclaim this zone could lead to continued selling pressure. The formation of a bullish candle with higher highs and higher lows indicates a possible pullback from oversold conditions, according to Pabitro Mukherjee from Bajaj Broking.

Bank Nifty’s Struggles

In contrast, Bank Nifty appears to be facing more significant challenges. Mukherjee highlights that the index formed a negative candle with an inverted hammer pattern, indicating selling pressure at higher levels. The inability to sustain above the 56,500 mark has led to consolidation within the 56,000–56,500 range, suggesting a lack of upward momentum. Immediate support is seen at 55,700–55,800, and a breach below this level could trigger further declines toward 55,200 and 54,800.

Investor Sentiment and Market Outlook

While the decline in crude oil prices provides some relief, analysts caution that prices remain elevated, which could impact India’s import bill and inflation outlook. Investors are advised to remain vigilant as the market navigates these complexities. The technical indicators suggest that a recovery is possible, but it hinges on key resistance levels being breached and sustained buying interest materializing.

Key Highlights

  • Global markets show positive momentum, with major indices gaining.
  • Nifty needs to sustain above 23,400 for a potential rebound.
  • Bank Nifty struggles to maintain momentum above 56,500.
  • Crude oil prices remain a concern for the macroeconomic outlook.
  • Immediate support for Nifty is seen at 23,000; for Bank Nifty, it’s at 55,700–55,800.

Investor Note: As markets react to global cues and technical indicators suggest potential reversals, investors should monitor key resistance and support levels closely while remaining cautious about macroeconomic factors that could influence market direction.
